Suejin Suh
Suejin Suh is originally from Long Island, New York. She studied English Literature and Creative Writing at New York University.
Her works have been previously published in the Ottawa Arts Review, Spot Literary Magazine and The Smoking Poet. She is
currently teaching in Seoul, South Korea.

Let's Go Out
In sixth grade our school had a gathering
for mothers and daughters to watch an educational
health film on puberty, or the "maturing female body".
The main girl in the movie was about our age.
On the day of getting her period, the girl sits in
her bedroom hugging a small pink pillow, her eyes
downcast. The girl's mother sits beside her, smiling. She then embraces
the girl and says, "Let's go out for ice cream!"
My friends and I, finding this an amusing statement, from that point forward
referred to having our periods as "going out for ice cream."
